A floating dry-dock was used to repair boats while they were still operable in the water. The dry-dock would sink itself around the damaged ship, close the bay doors, and pump out all the water giving full access to the underside of ships. While dry-docks made the most sense, they were shared among squadrons, so repairs were often made by divers, or, the ship pulled up onto a beach.
